The San Diego A.A. Coordinator" is a monthly newsletter published by the San Diego Central Office of Alcoholics Anonymous. Opinions expressed are not necessarily those of Alcoholics Anonymous as a whole, nor does publication of any article imply endorsement by Alcoholics Anonymous or San Diego Central Office, except when Conference approved publications are quoted.

Contributions from A.A. members are welcome and will be printed as space allows. Submissions must be typed or neatly handwritten with contact numbers and signed (your name and last initials only, or "Anonymous" when requested with signature, will be published). The editors reserve the right to edit contents for length, clarity and their relation to the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. An effort will be made to contact the author regarding content changes.

The Newsletter Committee would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support.

Committee News and Announcements

This month, the focus is on service opportunities.  There are lots of opportunities for Third Legacy work in San Diego AA.  We invite you to look over the possibilities, then pick up the phone and get into action!

Central Office.  Needs individuals to fill in for scheduled phone volunteers when those volunteers are unavailable (travel, sick) to man shifts for June, July and August.  Yours might be the first AA voice heard by a still suffering alcoholic.  Please call Central Office at 619-265-8762.

After Hours Phones Committee.  Needs groups to volunteer as a stand by or to be on the waiting list to answer phones one night per month during the evening hours.  Please call Central Office at 619-265-8762.

Outreach Committee.  Each group may have an elected coordinator represent their group at Coordinating Council. The council makes decisions affecting all of AA in San Diego, and these decisions are based on the collective group conscience of individual groups.  If your group is not represented, your group’s voice is not heard.  The coordinator is a service position.  The Outreach Committee invites you to visit a Coordinating Council meeting at 7:30 PM on the second Thursday of each month at 2728 6th Avenue.   Please call Central Office at 619-265-8762. for more information on how YOUR group can send a coordinator to council.

Program Committee.  This committee needs a committee member, man or woman, willing to work on annual event planning.  The Program Committee is responsible for the Founder’s Day picnic, Anniversary  Breakfast, and the New Year’s Eve dance.  If you want to be part of this dynamic, high energy committee, please call Central Office at 619-265-8762 to find out how.  There is a requirement for one year of sobriety.  Also, this summer’s picnic will need volunteers, such as parking attendants willing to work 15 minute shifts.  If you or your group is willing to help, please call Les.

Public Info Committee.  Ever wonder who mans those booths at health fairs and speaks to high schools students about AA?  The Public Information Committee does.  They are invited to speak at health fairs, colleges, and high schools.  The committee offers many service opportunities to AA volunteers.  Some typical, upcoming events are the Recovery Walk in Balboa Park and an HMO  Health  Fair in Mission Valley.  This committee tries to select age appropriate speakers for each venue.   If you are interested in finding out more, or interested in speaking about AA in non-AA locations, please Central Office at 619-265-8762.  Also, needed is a woman committee member.  Please raise your hand for this opportunity.

Newsletter Committee.   Needs AAers to write articles on monthly sobriety themes for the AA Coordinator Newsletter.  Upcoming themes are printed on the front page of each  newsletter.  Also needed are individuals or groups to help with fold and label “parties” at 6 PM on the Wednesday following the second Thursday of each month.  The location is the Central Office.  This is a wonderful fellowship opportunity.  Central Office at 619-265-8762.

H&I Chair: This Area 8 committee needs LOTS of volunteers!!  LOTS!!  Each month, more than 400 panels go into treatment or corrections facilities and bring a meeting to those who are unable to get out to one.  Orientation is at 12:15 PM on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 5150 Kearny Mesa Road, or at 7PM on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Central Office.  Groups can volunteer too!!  Groups can adopt a panel, and man that panel with home group members.  This is a wonderful service opportunity for each individual person as well as for group unity.  Still more volunteers are needed for Contact on Release programs for local jails and treatment facilities.  Contact on Release picks up where H&I leaves off by getting newly released inmates and treatment facility patients to AA meetings within 24 hours of release.  H&I has a great need for volunteers because these panels cover all of San Diego and Imperial County.  Central Office at 619-265-8762.
